“HOLD UP (ALL FIREARMS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM)” gestures towards a global history of electronic, dance, and punk subcultures. But it’s not nostalgic. Instead, it’s a one-way mirror. Salford-based duo SILVERWINGKILLER have ripped open the threshold into a future that is actively being denied to us. Curfews are being clamped on all-nighters. Venues are being bulldozed, with their rubble being reconstructed into chain franchises and flats. Spaces that were once used to experiment, collaborate, and make noise in – spaces that were once Petri dishes for arts and culture – are being swallowed by vacuum-mouthed, profit-hungry leeches.
HOLD UP is an anti-venom to our ultra-fast, exocapitalist, hyperreal present. It retaliates, kicking down the walls of a more-more-more culture with steel capped boots, pushing the limits, crossing borders, twisting rules into a chaos of their own machination. The track throbs with a palatable anger that turns to punk defiance in the face of cultural collapse. HOLD UP’s frenzied breakbeats and urgent vocals punctuate a brooding baseline. Higher and higher, the track pulsates at a breathless pace, reaching entropic heights until – crash. The illusion shatters. A thousand pixels scatter out of a dead screen, into the ether.
In these scattered shards, we see our own reflections.
