The door slowly creaks open then slams shut behind me. Everyone stops in their tracks and you can hear the proverbial pin drop. I enter with trepidation then proceed to capture all the quirks and characters of another great British institution.

My school bus used to travel the length of New Hall Lane. I vividly remember all the weird and wonderful pub names: The Queen Adelaide, General Codrington, and Rosebud. This stretch used to boast over 10 pubs but only one remains today, The Hesketh’s Arms. You knew you’d been in battle if you made it to the last pub. Those names have always stayed with me, and potentially, subconsciously provide one explanation for this series.

I often say to my daughters that many of these establishments won’t be there as they get older. I see it as extremely important to document this piece of social history.
